How Do We 'PULL' Youth into the Picture of Learning? (Young Inventors Society is one way)

Seems too often we get busy thinking up education programs that are cool for us adults but forget that making it cool for THEM is the goal. So, how do we engage our youth? After all, what we choos...

Interesting take on video games and kids learning ...

http://www.elearnspace.org/blog

This is the kind of report parents dream of - Video games are good for children : "video games can stimulate learning of facts and skills such as strategic thinking, creativity, cooperation and innovative thinking, which are important skills in the information society".
It reminds me of Steinkuehler Duncan's Scientific Habits of Minds in Virtual Worlds (.pdf) where they address "the potential of games for fostering scientific habits of mind".
People learn constantly - through games, strolling through a meadow, or sitting and thinking. It's how we're wired. The question for me is not whether we can learn through video games (we obviously can), but whether games are a more effective way of learning than other approaches.

A message to all members of The Global Education Collaborative

Greetings to all GEC members, including the recent influx of new ones. The Global Education Collaborative was featured in eSchool News in mid-November and many of its readers checked the GEC out. It's thrilling to have so many potential project partners join us!

As of this writing, we now have 978 members including people from Hungary, Budapest, Spain, Mexico, China, Russia, and the Phillipines.

Thirty-four projects are also now listed in the GEC spreadsheet. To post a project, use this form: http://tinyurl.com/gecform/. To see the posted projects, visit: http://tinyurl.com/gecspreadsheet. And, even more project ideas can be found in the forum: http://tinyurl.com/gecforum.

Many education bloggers like to post "challenges" for their readers. For example, Steve Dembo recently had readers of his Teach 42 blog participate in activities to improve the quality of their blogging via his 30 Days to being a Better Blogger challenge. I propose that we do something similar here in the GEC!

We will have a weekly activity in which members participate collaboratively. These activities can range from getting to know each other kinds of activities to the exploration of web-based collboration tools. Post your ideas for activities in the forum as I will need help.

Our first "challenge" activity will be for members to post their locations to a Google Map (be as general as you want; you do not need to post a specific address). I've added my placemark; I hope you will add yours so we can see where members hail from. The link and directions for this map are located here: http://tinyurl.com/gecmembermap .

Finally, I'm writing this newsletter from Singapore as I've traveled from Chicago, Illinois, to help out with the Apple's 2008 Asia Distinguished Educator Institute. I am going to try and hold an online GEC meeting using Flashmeeting during this event for people to discuss global initiatives. Stay tuned as I work out logistics.

Thanks for your support,

Lucy Gray

It is a hard to argue with any of the above points. However, one of the challenges I wrestle with is: From a systems perspective, if we move to a more self-directed model of education, how do we build in the mechanisms to ensure/validate that learners have developed mastery of the core capabilities required to serve in different roles in society.

Introducing the new silo .... same as the old one :/

One of the biggest flags that I want us to watch out for is 'silo' reproduction. New knowledge held in (what are called) new silos, more often than… Continue

CHAPTER #1 -- THE FOUNDATION

For some 2000 years or more civilization has been ruled by a social paradigm on which all aspects of the EuroAmerican cultures are been based -- the “dominator paradigm.” In the past 2 two decades a new social paradigm has been emerging that could have the most, deep, fundamental impact on human civilization since humanids first came down from the trees. The old paradigm placed humans in a purposeful universe created by some super normal power for t… Continue

Web Technology as Sacred

The Web has reached a level of maturity where it can be viewed as an extension to our interconnected conscious selves. This perspective brings a new dimension to our idea of 'global awareness' and stretches the meaningfulness of '… Continue
